Hi! My name is Gizmo.
Don't let my age fool you. I am in great shape! I love to go on short walks and meet new people and dogs. I am a very quiet dog but I will bark when I hear a knock on the door or see someone walking by outside to make sure my family knows they are there. After alerting them I always come over to make sure they are ok and be told I did a good job. I will also bark when I see people on walks but wag my tail as soon as they are close enough to pet me, and whine when I see dogs because I want to meet them so much. I am not afraid of other dogs and like to walk around the dog park sniffing everyone but I can't keep up with the younger dogs and am not too interested in playing. Sometimes I like to try to assert myself by mounting other dogs but will stop when a dog or person tells me to.
When large groups of people have come to the house I am not shy at all and love to make my rounds to make sure everyone has a chance to pet me. Which reminds me, my favorite thing in the world is to be pet and I could have my belly rubbed for hours! I like to nudge with my nose if someone stops petting me to remind them to keep going, and when my foster mom's hands get tired I will jump down from the couch and lie at her feet so she can rub me with those instead.
My current best friend is my foster brother who is a one year old cat. He likes to surprise me by pouncing and swatting at my tail but I tolerate it because I grew up with a cat and am used to things like that. Sometimes I get hyper when I come in from a walk and play with him for a few minutes. We are the same size so we can play without hurting each other. I am very gentle with him and even lick his ears at the end.
When I first came to my foster home I wasn't crazy about being picked up and held but I have gotten used to it and don't mind it as much anymore. I love the healthy treats my foster family gives me and will sit and lie down with military precision. I do not jump on people and am very conservative when giving kisses. I am very good at respecting boundaries and will leave an area when told and do not enter the kitchen when someone is cooking.
Occasionally I will pick something up that I am not supposed to but if you hold your hand out and give me a few stern “drop it” and “give it to me” commands I will drop it into your hand. I have chewed through a few undergarments that were left on the floor and got into the small bathroom trash can a few times when I first arrived, but with covered trash cans and clothes off of the floor I have not had any more incidents.
I love to follow my foster mom from room to room and she calls me her little body guard. At my old home I used to sleep in the crate at night, but at my foster home I like to sleep under the bed.
When you see my sweet, puppy dog eyes I know you will fall in love with me. I would do well in a home where someone was home to hang out with me most of the day, but I do very well when left on my own and have never had an accident. I get along great with cats, other dogs and people but very young children might be a bit too energetic for me. In the beginning you may have to assert yourself a little to make sure I know you are the alpha but after that I will be your best friend.
