Something that has been kind of bugging me lately is the lawsuits I see filed against the company that makes taxotere. If you don’t know, taxotere is chemotherapy that they give you if you have breast cancer, or other types of cancer. The problem is that is causes hair loss. I know, you’re probably thinking, doesn’t all chemo cause hair loss? Well the problem here is that the hair loss is permanent!
That’s right, the hair just doesn’t grow back at all. This is a condition known as alopecia. Even treatments like rogaine don’t help. No one knows for sure why taxotere causes permanent hair loss, but it does. You can go here to see the info about rogaine and taxotere. At best, the findings are inconclusive.
You may also be thinking, maybe hair loss isn’t such a big deal. But, remember that this is women we are talking about! For a woman, their hair is they’re pride. Maybe a guy can be okay going bald. Some guys even shave their head on purpose because they like the way it looks. Maybe they think they look like Lex Luther. Either way, that’s men we’re talking about not women. How many women do you know that shave their head on purpose? How about none?
Yes, alopecia in a woman is devastating.
Another thing to note is that the hair loss isn’t just the hair on top of the head. It is also the eyebrows and eyelashes. You may not have ever noticed, but the eyebrows and eyelashes really are a huge part of a woman’s femininity. An absence of eyebrows is disfiguring. Most importantly, the hair loss in a woman changes how she feels about herself If you think of the most beautiful women you know and then imaging her without eyebrows or eyelashes, she’s no longer that beautiful is she? (at least not in the traditional sense). The fact remains that losing your hair permanently for a women is terrible and if you could avoid it you definitely would.
The lawsuits are coming in because these women were not told that the taxotere could cause permanent hair loss! There are several other chemo options that work just as well as taxotere, but don’t cause the alopecia. So why did they use taxotere at all? Because their doctors never told them about it! Thats why the taxotere lawsuits are popping up everywhere.
Granted some doctors just didn’t know. But, the really nasty part is that some doctors did know. At least the medical institutions they worked for knew about it. So, why didn’t they tell the patient? They didn’t tell them because Sanofi, the company that makes the taxotere treatment was giving them kickbacks and incentives to conceal the information.
That’s right. Doctors and hospital administrators were treated to cash, vacations, and various other “educational seminars” that were really just them receiving wining and dining. They received this in exchange for their silence on the adverse side effects of their precious taxotere treatment. It has now come out that they might have even been aware of this side effect for almost 20 years!
So these doctors and hospital managers took the bribes and withheld important information from their patients with no one to rescue them from this deceit. One study shows that $30 million was spent on “weekend training”. This information would cause them to have permanent disfiguring hair loss. But at least they enjoyed their “seminar” in the Bahamas (sarcasm strongly intended).
When someone is getting chemo, it’s one of the most difficult times of their lives. It’s so hard because you don’t know how you’re going to take it or if you’ll even survive. It is at this time that the medical professionals that are supposed to be taking care of these women took advantage of them by recommending such a harmful treatment. This is the worst demonstration of greed.
I find this all very upsetting so I wanted to talk about it here. I know we normally discuss cute thing like papillons playing on the computer, but this is just too important to not talk about for me. If you know anyone that has been a victim of this greed and cruelty I implore you to tell them to take legal action and get in on the settlements. They may not get their hair back, but at least they can make these people pay.
